David Beckham was dropped from England's team for next week's exhibition game in Germany because his coach says he's not in shape. Coach Fabio Capello said the former captain will not play against the Germans because the Los Angeles Galaxy's season is over in Major League Soccer and Beckham is idle until he joins AC Milan on loan in January. Capello said he would have selected Beckham if the Galaxy had made the MLS playoffs.
D.C. United midfielder Fred will join an Australian league team on loan for six games in an effort to stay in shape. The Brazilian will be eligible to play Nov. 23 with Wellington FC Phoenix, which is based in New Zealand. Fred played in Australia during the 2006-07 season with the Melbourne Victory.
"Fred really wants to continue playing and maintaining his fitness during our offseason, so we have agreed to this short-term loan," United general manager Dave Kasper said.
Fred had two goals and four assists in 23 MLS games this season.
