The E.P.L.: The Final Curtain

by Bagga Wilks
Contrary to the fake prophesy the world did not end at 6 p.m. on Saturday, May 21, 2011. As per usual, the sun rose on Saturday, May 21 and unperturbed the sun went about its business and unobtrusively ventured into the perennial sunset. The English Premier League for 2010-11 was not as kind. On Sunday, May 22, 2011, the sun set on the English Premier League.
Unfortunately, as the Darwinian custom three teams from the English League were relegated and three teams from the Championship League will be promoted to the E.P.L. Birmingham, the team that defeated Arsenal in the Carling Cup, West Ham and Blackpool will be relegated. Some teams are relegated and bounce right back. Other teams, deprived of lucrative television revenues and devoid of their better players, find it extremely difficult to return to the Premier League.
The race for relegation came to the last match of the season. This is a reflection of the competitiveness of the English Premier League. It became abundantly clear during the first half of the season that on any given day, the less well-endowed teams could defeat the more well-endowed teams. As the season progressed, the sheep separated themselves from the goats. The truism is that the weaker teams gave up too many goals and scored too few goals.
Even though Manchester United had sewn up the E.P.L. before the last game of the season, they waited for that finale to take their victory lap. The game against Blackpool was a classical example why Manchester emerged in 2010-11 as the champions and why Blackpool has been relegated. Blackpool had the lead at one stage of the match but the relentless Manchester forays led to Blackpool scoring an own goal and the consequent collapse of Blackpool’s ability to defend.

Manchester Triumphant

By Bagga Wilks
The Manchester United vs Chelsea game produced interesting match-ups. Ashley Cole the Chelsea and England left-full back was beaten and turned around repeatedly by Valencia, Manchester United and Ecuador’s right mid-field player. It was similar to Bale of Tottenham running rings about Macion of Inter Milan and Brazilian’s right full back. Valencia only returned to action in January after suffering a broken ankle the previous season.
Chelsea’s central defenders did not match up well with Rooney and Hernandez. The latter scored in the first 30 seconds of what was virtually the play-off game for the English Premier League. Both Luiz and Terry were caught square. The newly acquired Luiz started so shaky that he was replaced by Alex at half time.
At half time trailing 2-0, the Chelsea coach, Ancelotti went to his bench and replaced Mikel with Ramires. Later, the $50 million Torres replaced Kalou. Lampard scored in the second half but was never was able to put his stamp on the game. Essien has become an inconsequential mid-field player. Terry is no longer a dominant central defender. Chelsea ended the season strong but the big question mark for next season is to what extent has the squad aged? Does the squad need tinkering or does it need massive rejuvenation?

EPL Fitness Test

So it looks like there are some stats to the English Premiership, The Daily Mail on Sunday printed the tracked top speeds of players in their most recent games. It looks like Super Mario could be a huge asset if he was his speed at getting to the mall was not matched by his speed to get all those cards. On the American front, it looks like USMNT player Clint Dempsey makes the list being the trotter on Fulham. Take the in hte full - list above.

Race to the Top, Race to the Bottom

By Bagga Wilks
In the long and torturous soccer season, the race is not necessarily for the swift but for those who can endure it to the end.
La Liga
In the Spanish La Liga there is Barcelona and Real Madrid and the rest. This Saturday, April 16, 2011, the two Spanish League giants will clash. In addition, there is the strong possibility that both will play each other twice in the Champion League semi-final.
This Saturday, we will not only see two of the great soccer teams in the world but on display will be two of the great players in the game, Messi of Barcelona and Ronaldo of Real Madrid.
Barcelona has a comfortable lead over Real Madrid in La Liga. To narrow the 8 point gap, Real Madrid will have to win on Saturday and hope that Barca stumbles down the stretch. Valencia is in third place with 60 points and Villareal is in fourth with 54 points, a large separation between the men and the boys. At present, Almeria, Malaga and Hercules are poised for relegation.
Serie A
Coming down the homestretch, the Serie A race is among 3 teams. A.C. Milan, who defeated Fiorentina last Sunday with 68 points, the tenacious Napoli with 65 points and the unpredictable Internazionale with 63 points.

International Soccer: The Haves and the Have Nots
By
Bagga Wilks
Soccer is undoubtedly the most globalized professional sport on the planet. The best players from all parts of the world gravitate to the English Premier League, La Liga in Spain, Serie A in Italy and the Bundesliga in Germany. National leagues persist but once outstanding talent crystallizes, those players by the lure of big money leave home to play among the giants. A case in point is the burgeoning Brazilian star, Neymar, who plays for Santos and it is expected that in the summer of 2011, he will be given a lucrative contract by one of the top clubs in the world of soccer.
Brazil, a world class national team, lacks a first class league comparable to those in Europe and thus they must throw their young lions to the European gladiators. Their aging lions like Ronaldo, Ze Roberto and Ronaldinho, return to Brazil for the last hurrah.
Within Europe, there are great disparities of earnings. The poor clubs simply cannot compete and more often than not serve as farm teams for the development of latent talent. When the penurious teams develop their own talent, the converse of Robin Hood takes place. The rich simply poach on the poor and ensure the perpetuation of their second class status with the only hope to be rescued by some oil tycoon from the United Arab Emirates.

Ballharambe: EPL Standings at Half-Time

By
Bagga Wilks
We have reached the half way mark in the English Premier League. There are five teams in contention for the title, the leaders, Manchester United with 44 points with a game in hand, Manchester City with 42 points, Arsenal with 40 points with having played one game less than Manchester City, Tottenham in 4th place with 36 points and the slumvering Chelsea with 35 points.
Manchester United has not hit top form but are in the lead and find ways of winning close games even when they are far from their best.

There was gnashing of teeth as strong delegations from England and the United States made gallant efforts to stage the World Cup in their respective territories. The British trotted out Prime Minister David Cameron and Prince William in their quest to double up on obtaining the Olympic Games in 2012.

Has Arsenal Whippersnappers Arrived?

by Bagga Wilks
Arsenal defeated Manchester City 3-0 on their own home grounds. Winning away from home is a big deal in the English Premier League. All last season, the Gunners were outgunned by the top teams. Whenever they matched up with Chelsea or Manchester United, it was like boys against men. Arsenal on Sunday, October 24, 2010 took apart the opulent Manchester City with rich pinpointed short passing.
