Whither Ronaldinho, Robinho and Kaka

Ball Harambee By Bagga Wilks

Paul Vickery who is one of the better soccer pundits published a piece on ESPN soccer stating that the Brazilian coach, Scolari, has indicated that 80 percent of the Brazilian team for the World Cup 2014 has already been selected. Based on the success of the Confederation Cup, I doubt if Scolari will tinker with his starting eleven or the bench. Scolari has a lot to do with accelerating the work rate of every member of the squad. The forwards are expected to fall back and defend. The mid-field players and full backs are expected to join in the attack. It’s a full court press for ninety minutes and especially in the final with Spain, Brazil out-hustled, out-muscled the Spaniards.

The pre-Scolari teams tended to play too slow, were too tardy and lacked intensity. That is anti-thetical modern football. Like the workers of the world, international players must have a high rate of productivity. Unlike the workers of the world, the professional soccer players are well paid.

Does that mean there is no hope for Ronaldinho, Robinho or Kaka?

Ronaldinho has recovered some form since returning to Brazil and has taken his team, Atletico Mineiro, to the final of Copa Libertadores. But at 33 can Ronaldinho play on two sides of the ball? He certainly is capable of defense splitting passes but for Scolari that might not be enough.

Robinho has fallen off a cliff. A.C. Milan was negotiating a transfer to Santos of Brazil but the transfer negotiations have broken down. Robinho doesn’t seem to be in the plans of A.C. Milan and his hefty salary of 4 million pounds makes it a chore for another club to give the once Brazilian star an opportunity to play on a regular basis.

Kaka’s career also plummeted once moving to Real Madrid. Plagued by injuries and the garguantun footprints of Ronaldo, Mourinho kept him in the shadows. With the advent of Ancellotti, Kaka hopes that he will be given more playing time. Whether that will mean space on the Brazilian national team, that will not be an easy task.

Scolari’s message is that Brazil has entered a new age and the stars of yesteryear must be confined to the history books.

Brazil Falters

By Bagga Wilks

Mano Menezes has been experimenting with the Brazilian squad since he succeeded Dunga as the coach of the Brazilian national team. In essence the experiment has come to a close as Menezes has settled on his squad of 22 that he has selected for Copa America. A squad is not a team and that was obvious from Brazil’s goal-less draw with Venezuela.

Menezes has adopted a 4-3-3 formation and on paper, the aggregation has the potential to be one of Brazil’s great national teams. Up front, there is Neymar, Robinho and Plato. In the mid-field, there is the highly touted Ganso, and there is Ramires and Lucas as the defensive mid-fielders. Brazil is quite solid in the back with Lucio and Thiago Silva as the central defenders and Dani Alves and Santos as the two full backs. And there is Julio Cesar in goal, one of the best between the sticks in the world.

In recent World Cups, Brazil has produced great teams. The 1970 team with Pele, Carlos Alberto, Gerson and Jairzinho was formidable. That team destroyed Italy in the 1970 World Cup Final.

Menenzes Precarious Perch

By Bagga Wilks

Brazil and the Netherlands in a friendly on Saturday, June 4, 2011 played to a scoreless draw. The Brazilian national team will play another friendly on Tuesday, June 7 against Romania. That will be the last the team will play before the squad is reduced to 22 and to make final preparations for Copa America which begins in early July. Copa America will be a big test for Mano Menezes. If Brazil does not do well that will be his final curtain as Coach of the National team.

Menezes started out splendidly. Under his stewardship, Brazil seemed to be on a role. The team played exceedingly well against the United States. Against France, they were dominant until their mid-field player who was representing the Brazilian team for the first time received a red card. The task of keeping eleven men on the field is a new and vexing problem for the Brazilian squad. In the quarter-final of the World Cup against the Netherlands, Felipe Melo was sent off. In the recent game against the Netherlands, Ramires was sent off ten minutes before the final whistle. Ramires seems to be having a problem staying on the pitch for 90 minutes. In the Champions League game against Manchester United, his persistent fouling also led to an early shower.

There is no room for error when one is selected to coach the Brazilian national team. Dunga had his run and transformed Brazil into a defensive Italian –like makeover. Scolari who has returned to coaching in Brazil was successful in 2002 but he had Ronaldinho and Ronaldo when they were both at the top of their game.

Winning Championships and the Management Factor: AC Milan 3-0 Inter

Again we saw the significance of management in the derby spectacle of A.C. Milan v Inter Milan. Leonardo has done a decent job with Inter Milan since the club fired Rafael Benitez. Both Allegri, the A.C. Milan manager and Leonardo, the Inter Milan manager are “young Turks” as head coaches in the world of soccer. Leonardo still has a lot to learn as a tactician. Allegri seems to be learning fast as a manager. He is beginning to recognize that mid-field cannot be comprised of runners and has brought in the aging but still formidable Seedorf in mid-field. He played the indefatigable Prince Boateng right behind strikers Pato and Robinho. It might have been a blessing for Allegri and A.C. Milan that Ibrahimovic missed the game as a result of a prior red card.
Allegri has been skillful in putting together the A.C. Milan team. Van Bommel at defensive mid-field has made quite a difference and the pace and creativity of Pato and Robinho make quite a dynamic strike force.
The Inter-Milan team revolves around Sneidjer’s playmaking but the team lacks the combination of youth and experience that is the case with A.C. Milan. A.C. Milan won 3-0 and the title is now within their grasp and that will be a remarkable achievement for the young manager, Allegri.

A manager’s job is to make a collection of players into a “well-oiled” machine. To achieve greatness, great teams need the guidance of great managers. Sir Alex Ferguson and Allegri have shown that the critical role of the conductor of the symphony is to ensure that everyone plays from the same musical score.

Coaches and Superstars

By
Bagga Wilks

The Brazilian, Robinho, was transferred from Real Madrid to Manchester City with a great deal of money and even greater fanfare. Robinho never found his footing under Mark Hughes or his successor, Roberto Mancini. Robinho played fairly well his first season in the English Premier League. In his second season, he got injured playing for his country and after his recovery never really got back his ‘samba” rhythm. He lost confidence in his game and the Manchester City coaches lost confidence in him.
Robinho was in a hostile work environment and went back on loan to play for his old club in Brazil, Santos. He recovered his form and confidence and played decently for his country in the 2010 World Cup in South Africa under Dunga.
